Swedish Massage Common Ailments

Swedish massage promotes relaxation, eases muscle tension and creates other health benefits. In all Swedish massage, the massage therapist lubricates the skin with massage oil and performs various massage strokes that warm up and work the muscle tissue, releasing tension and breaking up muscle "knots" or adhered tissues, called adhesions.

Treatment Options - 30mins or 60mins

Before the Swedish massage, your massage therapist will ask you about any injuries or other conditions that she should know about. Things you would want tell a therapist include areas of tightness or pain, allergies, and conditions like pregnancy. You can also tell them up front if you have a preference for light or firm pressure. After the consultation, the massage therapist instructs you how to lie on the table -- face up or face down, and underneath the sheet or towel -- and then leaves the room. She will knock or ask if you are ready before re-entering.

During a Swedish massage you are invited to keep your underwear on but may be more comfortable without a bra. The massage therapist uncovers only the part of the body she is working on, a technique called draping. You usually start your Swedish Massage by lying face down with your head in a u-shaped face cradle so your spine stays neutral. The massage therapist generally starts by working on your back, using various massage strokes that include effleurage (gliding), kneading, friction, stretching and (sometimes) tapping. When finished with the back, she works the back of each leg. When done with the back side, she holds the sheet or towel up and looks away while you turn over onto your back; she quickly covers you again. The therapist then massages the front of each leg, both arms, and generally finishes with your neck and shoulders. If you decide to book a 50 minutes Swedish Massage, you can ask them to spend more time on a certain area. If the pressure is too light or too firm, please ask the therapist to adjust it.

Swedish massage usually includes some deeper work on areas of specific muscle tension, but if you truly want deeper, more intensive work and firmer pressure, book a Deep Tissue massage or Sports Massage . Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology, as opposed to energy work on "meridians" or sen lines in Asian massage systems. Most people get a 60-minute Swedish massage, but our 90-minutes option gives the therapist more time to work the muscle tissue and achieve results.

But you don't have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage is very similar to a gentle Swedish Massage that uses smooth, gliding strokes.

The primary purpose will be to help you relax, and your massage therapist will probably move at a slower pace and use lighter pressure.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue.

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.")
